The Sea Life London Aquarium

The Sea Life London Aquarium is housed on the ground level of County Hall near the London Eye on the South Bank of the River Thames in the heart of London. One million people attend it annually. The sea life centre was opened as the London Aquarium in March 1997. One of Europe's most extensive collections of marine life may be seen here. Rare and mysterious creatures, some of which are listed as endangered species, are included in the collection. Many of the animals were saved and cannot be returned to the wild, or they were produced as part of a conservation effort.

Up to 40,000 school children can attend the aquarium's two classrooms each year, which are also available to the public when not being used by the teaching programme. The classrooms are themed after the conservation initiatives that the zoo supports. It collaborates with several conservation groups, such as the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, Save Our Seas, and Shark Trust, and is actively involved in breeding projects for a variety of species, including the Cuban crocodile, seahorses, butterfly goodies, and jellyfish.

In 2005, the University of Essex's computer science department showcased three robotic Fish at the aquarium. The fish were made to swim about on their own and avoid obstacles like actual fish. They were designed with "the speed of tuna, acceleration of a pike, and eel navigational skills.”

Merlin Entertainments paid an unknown amount to acquire the aquarium in April 2008. They spent £5 million for renovation that was completed in April 2009. Architect Kay Elliott oversaw the construction of the additional underwater tunnel, Shark Walk, redesigned Pacific Ocean tank, and extensive rerouting of the display, among other modifications. When the attraction reopened in April 2009, it was formally renamed a Sea Life Centre.

The aquarium debuted a new penguin display in May 2011 with the relocation of 10 Gentoo penguins from the Edinburgh Zoo. Due to the debut of Shrek's Adventure! London in 2015, the aquarium was relocated to a new spot within County Hall. Presently the centre houses approximately 500 species.
